General Background : Individual nutrition, detoxification, and supplemental pancreatic enzymes make up the therapy that was advanced by William Donald Kelly, DDS,
now retired to Washington State. A dentist by training, Dr. Kelly developed this protocol in response to his own pancreatic cancer,
which he faced in the late 1960's.
One of the main points of Dr. Kelly's therapy is that cancer is often caused by the body's inability to effectively metabolize protein. this inability can be linked to improper amounts of proteolytic enzymes,
according to Dr. Kelly, who asserts that these protein-digesting pancreatic enzymes are the body's first defense against tumors, rather than the immune system. Dr. Kelly's theory is supported by research
which has shown that not only does the pancreas secrete digestive enzymes into the small intestine, it also secretesw them into the bloodstream where they can reach all cells in the body, including
cancer cells which they digest and subdue.
Dr. Kelly's metabolioc detoxification therapy calls for the restriction of preotein intake, while emphasizing a diet of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. This is additionally supplemented with proteolytic
enzymes as well as raw juices. Each person, though, has different nutritional needs and different capacities for the absorption of food and therefore needs to be dealt with on an individual basis, according
to Dr. Kelly's theory, which divides patients into ten different metabolic types, with slow-oxidizing vegetarians at one end and fast-oxidizing carnivores at the other. Thus, for each patient, a different version
of Dr. Kelly's program may be indicated. Dr. Kelly also recommends coffee enemas as a detoxifying agent.
Nicholas Gonzalez, MD, of New York City, a classically trained immunologist, currently employs a cancer treament which to a large extent is based on Kelly's therapy. Dr. Gonzalez' protocol includes six basic
concepts first put forward by Dr. Kelly; an appropriate diet for each individual, intensive nutritional support, photomorphogen (raw beef organs and glands) support, digestive aids such as hydrochloric acid,
proteolytic enzyme supplementation, and detoxification.
Dr. Gozalez did not just blindly adopt Dr. Kelly's work though. Rather, his belief that some of Dr. Kelly's protocols were valid came as a result of a five hundred page, five year study of Dr. Kelly's cancer patients.
The study was conducted under the auspices of Robert Good, MD, PhD, former President of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer
Centre.
Dr. Gonzalez originally tracked 50 of Dr. Kelly's patients, ages ranging from 21 to 71, all of whom were diagnosed as terminal or with extremely poor prognosis, encompassing 25 different types of cancer. The
results were astonishing as Dr. Gonzalez discovered the average survival time for the group was ten years and climbing.
To further test Dr. Kelly's results, Dr. Gonzalez decided to track 22 of his patients who had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, since this form of cancer had a five year survival rate with conventional medical
therapies of nearly zero percent, as well as a life expectancy of only two to three months. Ten of the patients who only consulted with Dr. Kelly once and then did not follow his treatment program survived only
an average of 67 days, or just over three months. Seven who followed his program only partially survived an average of 233 days, or nearly eight months. The five patients who followed his program closely though,
had a median survival rate of nine years as of 1987; four of the five were still alive and one had died of Alzheimer's disease.
Dr. Gonzalez, in his own practice today, has found that about 80% of his patients do well on his application of Dr. Kelly's therapy. " It is essential, though, that each patient comply 100% with their individual program
in order for them to survive, " says Dr. Gonzalez, adding that most of his patients " usually have already received radiation and chemotherapy, and may have been told they have only a few months to live by their
previous physicians. "
While Dr. Gonzalez' 80% success may be accurate and encouraging, it still needs to be verified through controlled trials. According to Dr. Gonzalez the NCI is currently reviewing his patient record in view of just such
a trial. " the ultimate goal for all of us is to try and get trials so we can get our therapies tested, " says Dr. Gonzalez. " Then if it
really does work, the world will have the documented facts to confirm it."
Case History : A 28 year old lawyer suffering from leukemia was brought to Dr. Gonzalez. Her leukemia was in it's most advanced stage referred to as "blast crisis", and she had been told by her previous doctors that she had only a few days to live. Dr. Gonzalez kept her alive, and after three months on his protocol, she became noticeably better. A year later, she was in complete remission and resumed her career.
General Background : One of the largest metabolic treatment centers is the American Biologics Hospital in Tijuana Mexico, which is headed by Robert Bradford, DSc. The Medical Director is Rodrigo Rodriguez, MD, and the Information Officer is Michael Culbert, DSc. American Biologics (AB) offers a multifactorial array of cancer therapies. According to Dr. Culbert, AB treats the human not the tumor. One of the primary modalities is Laetrile, since AB is one of the pioneering institutes in Laetrile use. Dr. Culbert points out that various indigenous populations have been cancer free because the natural components of their diet contain significant Laetrile content.
Case History : A male patien at American Biologics had a very serious tumor. " He was an engineer with rhabdomyosarcoma (a type of bone cancer) of the thigh the size of a bowling ball, " Dr. Culbert relates. " his doctors told him that he would have to have the leg and part of his groin removed, and have to undergo radiation. We placed him on a total metabolic program, and ozone gas was also infused directly into the tumor on intermittent days with herbal poultices also applied. Over a couple of months, the tumor became soft. Then it popped open and oozed out. At last report, ten years later, the patient was still doing well.
General Background : The International Medical Center (IMC) in El Paso Texas and Juarez Mexico, is another major metabolic treatment center. This clinic was the brainchild of H. Ray Evers, MD, a pioneering alternative physician who spent most of his practice in Alabama. Dr. Evers passed away in 1990 at the age of 77. Treatment at IMC incorporates various alternative medicine protocols which Dr. Evers developed for various conditions, including cancer. His had-picked successor is Francisco R. Soto, MD.
Case History : In August 1987, William Carson, a retired commercial banker was diagnosed with stage 4 bladder cancer. A biopsy showed that the tumor was growing directly on the lining of his bladder and there was strong indication that it had invaded the muscle wall of the bladder. His urologist advised him to have his bladder removed within the next two weeks. Instead, Carson went to Dr. Evers. He received chelation therapy, along with megadoses of Vitamin C. In addition, he was placed in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber to increase the oxygen content of his blood and to enhance the effectiveness of the chelation therapy. His bladder cancer went into a complete remission within 20 days. Nearly six years later, Carson remains cancer free and is now the US director of IMC.
For the greater partr of human history, nature has provided medical professionals with their pharmaceutical agents. And nature's pharmacy continues to play an integral role in the healing profession. Some 3,000 or more plant species have been used in the healing of cancer. In fact, the anticancer drugs vincristine sulfate and vinblastine sulfate were discovered by looking at the healing plants of native healers of Madagascar who used the herb periwinkle.
General Background : Perhaps no therapy has had as colorful a history as that of the late Harry Hoxsey. An herbal folk healer with a fanatical following, Hoxsey's herbal therapies date to the 1840's and his great-grandfather who bred horses in Illinois. One of his horses had cancer on it's leg and was put to pasture to die. Instead, the horse began grazing on certain plants in the pasture, and was cured. Hoxsey's great-grandfather later mixed the plants into a salve and used it to treat horses. Hoxsey's father, who assisted his father, also learned how to make the salve.
Case History : In 1979, a 56 year old woman was sent home to die after her surgeons found a tumor the size of a ping pong ball in her right ovary. Exploratory surgery had shattered the tumor into several pieces, causing it to spread throughout her body. Her colon and liver were particularly affected.
