Immune Enhancement Therapies

Immune enhancement therapies are frequently used by alternative physicians to treat cancer. A strong immune system is one of the keys to the delay and orevention of cancer, but the combination of poor nutrition and exposure to pollutants and natural toxins can cripple immune function, as can the aging of the thymus gland.

Immune enhancement therapies seek to restore the immune system to optimum function so that the body can then subdue the cancer. In alternative medicine, this is accomplished without the side effects associated with conventional therapies.

Immuno-Augmentative Therapy ( IAT)

General Background : During the 1960's, the late Lawrence Burton, PhD, a former senior oncologist at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City, isolated the four blood protein components used in the immuno-augmentative therapy, which he developed. Dr. Burton demonstrated that an imbalance in these four blood protein components would lead to the development of cancer. He labelled the four protein components the tumor antibody, which destroys cancer cells; the tumor complement, which activates the tumor antibody; the blocking protein, which inhibits the tumor antibody; and the deblocking protein, which neutralizes the blocking protein.

When these four components are balanced, the body is able to subdue cancer cells as part of it's normal activity. But if any of the components are out of balance, the body cannot adequately defend itself. For example, if there is too much of the blocking protein, the tumor antibody will be inhibited and unable to vanquish cancer cells. " All cells, when they die, release a blocking protein", Dr. Burton explained. " This prevents further activation of the antibody by it's complement, which in the case of cancer, would be the tumor cell."

The proportions of the four components used in IAT are determined by daily blood analyses. Dr. Burton discovered that by injecting certain amounts of the components into his patients, he could bring about remissions in many forms of cancer, including in patients who were classified as terminally ill. He was quick to point out, however, that his treatment was not a cure for cancer. " It is just like using insulin for diabetes," he said. " It controls the cancer and the patient can live a normal lifespan."

Despite Dr. Burton's low-key approach, by his own admission IAT has acheived tumor reduction, and even complete remission, in 40 to 60% of patients. Particularly impressive are the recoveries of patients with advanced colon cancer and mesothelial cancer (cancer of the abdomen). According to the NCI, there is a virtual zero five-year survival rate for both of these diseases, with patients with mesothelial cancer normally not surviving longer than four to seven. " we are the court of last resort," Dr. Burtton once joked, noting that the patients who came to him had tried everything else first, with their conditions only becoming worse. " Yet, on an overall basis, we are still sending four to six out of every ten people home improved." One of his patients who suffered from mesothelial cancer, for example, received IAT treatments for four years. Three years after he finished his treatments, his cancer remained in complete remission.

IAT has also shown good results as a treatment for cancers of the bladder, prostate, and pancreas, as well as for lymphomas. Futhermore, since the IAT process build's on the body's own natural anti-cancer immune function, it is virtually nontoxic. Dr. Burton did admit, however, that IAT was normally unsuccessful in treating bone cancer.

Although Dr. Burton passed away in 1993, IAT is still offered today at the clinic he founded in Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. Gustavo Andrade, MD, of Tijuana Mexico, is another physician who has had extensive clinical experience using the IAT method.

Case History : One of Dr. Burton's patients is a 78 year old woman, who credits her long-term survival to IAT. In 1968, the woman was diagnosed with endometrial (concerning the mucous membrane that lines the inner surface of the uterus) and uterine cancer. Her physician recommended a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), which she underwent. She also received radiation therapy. In 1979, she was diagnosed with infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the breast, which had spread to her lymph nodes. Although the breast tumor was very large, she refused to undergo a masectomy. She received further radiation therapy, with only partial results. In 1981, she began IAT treatments with Dr. Burton, and acheived complete remission of her condition. Twelve years later, she remains cancer free, and each year has an annual checkup at the clinic Dr. Burton founded in Freeport.

Livingston Therapy

General Background : In the 1940's, the late Virginia Livingston, MD, discovered a bacterium which she called Progenitor cryptocides. Accoeding to Dr. Livingston, this bacterium exists in all of us from the moment of conception until the moment of death, and she claimed that it is responsible for cancer. Like other pleomorphic microorganisms, progenitor cryptocides can change size and shape, becoming as small as a virus and as large as a bacterial microbe. It can be viewed in all of it's forms under a darkfield microscope. Dr. Livingston discovered that the bacterium caused cancer in experimental animal studies, and she found it in virtually all human and animal cancers.

Foods can also be contaminated with Progenitor cryptocides, ncluding beef, chicken, eggs, and milk, according to Dr. Livingston. This means that eating such foods can provide a basis for the infectious transmission of cancer. Because of this, the Livingston diet emphasizes fresh, raw or lightly cooked plant foods.

The basis of Livingston therapy is restoration of the immune system using a diet of vegetarian raw foods, vaccines, and nutritional supplements. The vaccines are derived from a culture of the patient's own bacteria. " It comes from the patient's own tissues, either from the tumor, the urine, the blood or the pleura (lung fluid), and it is specific for each person," Dr. Livingston explained. The Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine is also used, which is a mild tuberculin vaccine that stimulates the immune system. According to Dr. Livingston, BCG helps stimulate white blood cells to kill cancer cells. It's important to be certain that the patient has enough white blood cells to receive the vaccine, she noted, otherwise a waiting period is necessary for the white blood cell count to rise.

Dr. Livingston also discovered that pleomorphic microbes secrete a hormone that is remarkably similar to human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). During pregnancy, HCG coats the placenta, safeguarding the fetus from being destroyed by the mother's immune system. Dr. Livingston theorized that when a cancer cell forms, stimulated by progenitor crypocides, it is protected by a similar hormone. Her research, though initially ridiculed, was proven accurate through the work of researchers at Rockefeller University, Priceton Laboratories, and Allegheny General Hospital who found that all cancer cells do indeed contain HCG.

Another key to Dr. Livingston's program was her discovery that naturally occurring retinoid abscisic acid (a plant hormone and derivative of Vitamin A) neutralizes HCG production. According to Dr. Livingston, abscisic acid is a plant growth regulator which " causes seedlings to go to sleep in the fall ". Similarly, Dr.Livingston found, abscisic acid may cause cancer microbes to go to sleep. Her research has shown that cancer patients tend to have low levels of this naturally occurring anti-cancer chemical. Foods rich in abscisic acid include carrots, green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, and cereals. Unfortunately, the liver must be functioning optimally in order to convert the Vitamin A to abscisic acid, and the acid can be destroyed by cooking. However, the liver function of cancer patients is often subpar. To help counteract this condition, Dr. Livingston recommended drinking carrot juice with liver powder, noting that the enzymes present in the liver powder break down the Vitamin A into abscisic acid. She also advocated eating a near raw foods diet as a method of preserving their abscisic acid content. No sugar or refined flours, or high-sodium foods are allowed, and few, if any, animal foods, because of their high likelihood of being contaminated.

Dr. Livingston reported success with advanced breast cancer patients, as well as individuals with cancer of the esophagus (which had spread to the liver), colon cancer, Hodgkin's disease, and melanoma. Many of these cancers had spread to other portions of the body, and the patients were considered terminal. Although she passed away in 1990, Dr. Livingston's work is being carried on by other physicians. using the Livingston vaccine, they have noted shrinkage or disappearance of tumors, as well as complete remissions in patients with lymphocytic leukemia and malignant lymphoma.

According to Neil Nathan, MD, who carries on Dr. Livingston's work at the Livingston Foundation in San Diego, California, the success of the Livingston therapy depends on whether or not the cancer has metastasized. " When we work with people whose tumors are localized, such as in the prostate or the breast, and who haven't received chemotherapy or radiation, the remission rate ranges from 70 to 90%," he says. " If the cancers have moved into the bone, local lymph nodes or other areas that we consider signs of metastasis, then the remission rate drops down to 40 to 50%. And in cases that are considered terminal, meaning the cancer has spread to the major organs, and the patien has maybe three months to live according to conventional standards, we have about 20% rate of remission. But even that rate is still better than what conventional medicine offers."

Case History : One of Dr. Livingston's patients was a woman diagnosed with an inoperable inflammatory carcinoma of the breast, which is usually rapidly fatal. Two days after beginning Dr. Livingston's treatment, the woman's breast returned to it's normal pink color. She returned home, and her doctors could not understand how the tumor had become operable. Knowing that here cancer was an extremely vicious type of cancer, the woman chose to have a mastectomy as a safeguard. But when her doctors did the pathology report, the trumor that had been diagnosed in the previous biopsy was found to be completely gone, and her lymph nodes were clear. Today, the woman reports that she feels better than she has in years, due to following the Livingston program.
